OUTREACH
Pick ‘n Pay Spell Check 2011 won by Bergvliet Primary School learner, Daniyal Matthews
Bergvliet Primary School had three entrants in the Regional Finals of the Pick ‘n Pay Spell Check Competition. This was held at the V & A Waterfront in Cape Town on Wednesday, 17 August 2011. Learners had prepared for the competition by learning a list of approximately 1000 words. About 50 schools participated in these finals, totalling approximately 150 learners. Daniyal, a Grade Six learner, continued through all the rounds, ending up among the top three competitors. They represented their region at the Finals which were held on Tuesday, 06 September 2011 in Gauteng. Daniyal brought great honour and delight to his school by faultlessly proceeding through the nail-biting finals, and being declared the overall 2011 winner. Amongst the prizes which Daniyal won, both for himself and for his school, was the opportunity to share his success with another school, one which does not have the same resources as we are privileged to own. Bergvliet Primary School elected to share the gift, a vegetable tunnel to be constructed at the school of choice, with our close neighbours, Heathfield Primary School. On Tuesday, 08 November 2011 Daniyal and a group of his peers in Grades Five and Six, spent the morning helping the organizers and sponsers, Pick ‘n Pay and Nedbank, to erect the tunnel and prepare hundreds of plant bags into which the seeds of the vegetables were sown. Many hours of intensive, physical work were spent happily making the vision a reality – and this on a typically wet and windy Cape Spring day! We are extremely proud of our learners, Daniyal for his wonderful achievement and his fellow learners who whole-heartedly participated in the project, learning first hand of the joy and satisfaction which results from such community building endeavours.
Bergvliet Primary supports many charities such as the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the soup kitchen of Missionaries of Charity, the Ocean View Association for Persons with Disabilities, Help the Rural Child Charity Shop, Casual Day Fundraising Project for People with Disabilities, the Sunflower Fund and Little Angels.
Fines levied for the return of lost property (uniform, sports equipment, lunchboxes, etc.) and the proceeds from the sale of unclaimed lost property are donated to The Emma Animal Rescue Society in Fish Hoek, as are the tins of dogfood which the learners donate in order to retrieve cellphones confiscated during school hours.
2011
The support for the annual Lions Club of Bergvliet Easter Egg drive has been quite overwhelming – your generosity and caring attitude as a school body has been ably demonstrated by the huge amount of chocolate treats already collected.
The response to our call to save the plastic bread tags for the purchase of wheelchairs for the needy, has also met with a great response – please keep this collection ongoing – small efforts reap enormous rewards!
THANKS ARE DUE TO………..
All those who so very generously supported our appeal for petfood and blankets to be given to the SPCA. Although the visit by Oscar unavoidably had to be re-scheduled for the Fourth Term, we were overwhelmed by the generosity of our learners. The SPCA collected 2 cardboard boxes and nine carrier bags filled with food and other items. We also handed over cash donations brought in by learners. As always the BPS families demonstrated what caring and sharing in the community is all about.
LUNCH IS ON ME CIVVIES DAY
This Civvies Day was held on Friday, 20 May 2011 and its success raised the sum of R6 490,00 for the Peninsula School Feeding Association, which provides a meal at school each day for many hungry children.
Thank you to the BPS families for caring for the well-being of others.
DONATIONS TO ANIMAL RESCUE ORGANISATION
BPS recently donated the proceeds of last term’s Lost Property Sale and several cans of petfood to the Animal Rescue Organisation. This NGO is based in Ottery and does sterling work with abandoned and needy animals in areas of the Peninsula where people and animals are living under impoverished conditions. They also play an important role in educating people on how to care for their animals. A collection box will be placed near Mrs Williams’ Reception Office for any donations of tinned or dry petfood, blankets or other pet bedding. The contents of the box will be collected periodically for distribution by Animal Rescue. This will be a long-term project and with the arrival of the Winter months of cold and hunger for many animals, all donations will be very gratefully received.
